Getting to the school

The F train runs along McDonald Avenue and ends at Coney Island–Stillwell Av, so from Coney Island you can reach the school without a transfer. From Gravesend, both the train and driving work well. What class formats are available

• Small groups. Classes by level, from Beginner to Advanced. Groups stay small, so you speak in every class.

• Private lessons. $60 an hour, with flexible scheduling. Best for interview prep, exams, or English for a specific job.

• Small-group conversation practice. For people who understand a lot but stay quiet.

• TOEFL and IELTS prep on request.

• Citizenship test preparation. Ask the office about the next start date.

Evening and weekend groups are the most popular, since most adults work during the day.

How to choose a school: five questions to ask

1. How many people are in the group? In a class of twenty, you'll speak for two minutes per lesson. The smaller the group, the better.

2. Who teaches? Look for native or near-native English speakers with experience teaching people who are learning English as a second language.

3. Do they test your level first? If a school puts you in a group without ever talking to you, that's a warning sign.

4. Does the schedule match your life? A great curriculum is useless if class meets when you're at work.

5. Is the school licensed? In New York, private career schools are licensed by the State Education Department (BPSS). Ours is licensed by BPSS and accredited by CEA, and you can verify accreditation at cea-accredit.org.

What about free classes?

They exist, and they're a good place to start. Brooklyn's public libraries, including the Brighton Beach branch, offer free classes for beginners, and some don't require registration. If you're just starting out and money is tight, try those first.

The limits are easy to see: fixed meeting times, sometimes large groups, and a curriculum built for beginners. A paid school wins on flexible scheduling, group size, and individual attention.

How long does it take to start speaking?

The honest answer depends on where you start and how much you practice. If you study two or three times a week and use English outside class, most people notice real progress within a few months. If you come once a week and stay silent the rest of the time, progress will be slow. No school can learn English for you, but a good one saves you time and keeps mistakes from becoming habits.
